How to Choose a Small Moonshine Still by Size
Small stills come in three sizes on this page. Pick the one that matches how much you plan to run and how much room you have.
If you searched for a 5 gallon still or a 5 gallon copper still, our 6 gallon models fill that spot. They give you a little extra room in the pot, which helps because you should never fill a pot all the way to the top. If you already know you want more, see our 10 gallon copper stills.
- 2 gallon: the smallest option. Good for learning, small batches and tight spaces.
- 3 gallon: a simple pot and condenser with no thumper, at our lowest price.
- 6 gallon: the most popular size here, with the most choices in heat source and setup.
Propane, Electric or Flame Flow Heat
How you heat your still matters as much as its size. Propane and stovetop stills are simple and flexible. Our 110V electric stills plug into a normal wall outlet and come with a heating element and controller, so you can set the heat and hold it steady.
Our Flame Flow stills use our patented design (U.S. Patent 10,561,960). It is built for faster heat-up, more even temperature, less wasted propane and less scorching on the bottom of the pot.
What Comes in the Box
Read the product title to see what you get. A complete still includes the pot, a thumper and a worm (condenser). The thumper redistills the vapor on its way through, and the worm cools the vapor back into liquid. Learn more on our thumper keg page.
Our "EZ KIT" models come as parts you solder together yourself. They are a great fit if you like building things with your hands. See all of our DIY you-solder kits.
- 3 gallon still: pot and condenser, no thumper.
- 6 gallon complete stills: pot, thumper and worm.
- Advanced models: EZ Seal Cap plus a 3 inch (2 gallon) or 4 inch (6 gallon) thumper port.
- Electric models: 110V heating element with controller.
Why Heavy Copper Matters in a Mini Copper Still
Cheap thin imported stills can dent, warp and wear out fast. Ours are cut, rolled, formed, soldered, tested, adjusted and inspected before they leave the building. The thick 22 gauge copper holds its shape and spreads heat evenly. Read what thickness copper a still needs to see why gauge matters.
Every copper still we sell comes with a lifetime warranty. As Alchemist G.G. Wilkins, I build each one like it is going on my own bench, because a good still should outlast the person who bought it.
Who a Small Still Is For
A small still is a good choice for first-time buyers, hobbyists, and anyone who wants to make distilled water or essential oils at home. It is also a good way to learn how a still works before you buy a bigger one.
Owning a still of any size is legal under US federal law. Making alcohol to drink at home is not legal without a federal TTB permit, even for personal use. State and local laws vary, so check yours. Read more on whether stills are legal to own. We don't give legal advice.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best small moonshine still for a beginner?
A 2 or 6 gallon complete still is a good place to start. It comes with the pot, thumper and worm, so you don't need to buy extra parts. If you like to build things, an EZ KIT lets you solder it yourself.
Do you sell a 5 gallon moonshine still?
Our closest size is 6 gallons. It fills the same need as a 5 gallon still and gives you a little extra room in the pot. We offer 6 gallon models for propane, 110V electric and Flame Flow heat.
How much does a mini copper still kit cost?
On this page, prices run from $229 to $1,199. Our 2 gallon EZ KIT is $379 and our 6 gallon EZ KIT is $499. Complete and electric stills cost more because they come fully built.
Is a home still kit legal to own?
Yes, under US federal law you can buy and own a still of any size. You can use it for distilled water, essential oils and similar uses. Distilling alcohol to drink requires a federal TTB permit, and state laws can be stricter, so check yours.
Can I run a small still on electric power?
Yes. Our 6 gallon electric stills run on 110V, which is a normal household outlet. They come with a heating element and controller so you can hold a steady temperature.
