Which 15 Gallon Copper Still Is Right for You?
All six products on this page share the same 15 gallon size. The real choice is how much work you want to do and how you want to heat it.
If you like to build things with your hands, pick a kit. If you want to unpack it and start, pick a complete still. If you can't or don't want to use a propane flame, pick the electric model.
- You-solder EZ KITs: $629 to $699. You solder the parts yourself. See our DIY moonshine still kits for more.
- Complete Advanced Model stills: $1,049. Ready to run, with options like the EZ Seal Cap and a 4 inch thumper port.
- 220V electric still: $1,299. Heats with an electric element instead of a flame.
- Custom diamond-shape still: $1,999. A one-of-a-kind piece with EZ Seal Cap, thumper and worm.
What Comes With a Complete 15 Gallon Moonshine Still
A complete still has three main parts. The pot holds and heats your liquid. The thumper redistills the vapor on its way through, which gives a cleaner result in one run. The worm, or condenser, cools the vapor back into liquid so it can drip out the end.
Read the product title closely. Titles that say "Complete" or list a thumper and worm include the full setup. The EZ Seal Cap makes sealing the cap to the pot simpler, and the 4 inch thumper port gives vapor a wide path into the thumper. Want to learn more about that middle piece? Heat Source: Propane or 220V Electric
Most of our 15 gallon stills sit over an outdoor propane burner. Burners are sold separately on our still parts and accessories page. Propane heats fast and works well outside.
The 220V electric model uses a heating element instead of a flame. It needs a 220V outlet, like the kind used for a dryer. Electric heat is easier to hold steady, which matters when you are watching temperatures closely. Compare more options on our electric moonshine stills page.
Why Heavy 20 oz Copper Matters
Copper spreads heat evenly, so your liquid warms up without hot spots that scorch. Thick copper holds its shape, stands up to years of heating and cooling, and is easier to repair.
We build every still from 20 oz, 22 gauge American copper. That is much heavier than the thin copper on cheap imported stills. Each one is cut, rolled, formed, soldered, tested, adjusted and inspected before it leaves the building, and our copper stills carry a lifetime warranty.
As G.G. Wilkins, I like to say a good alchemist trusts his tools. Heavy copper is a tool you can trust for a lifetime.
Is a 15 Gallon Still the Right Size?
A 15 gallon still is a good fit if smaller stills feel too slow but you don't need a big setup. It is a common step up for people who started small.
If you want something lighter to move around, look at our 10 gallon copper stills. If you want bigger batches, see our 20 and 25 gallon copper stills. Not sure yet? Our simple sizing guide walks you through it.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a 15 gallon copper still cost?
On this page, 15 gallon stills range from $629 to $1,999. You-solder EZ KITs start at $629, complete Advanced Model stills are $1,049, and the 220V electric model is $1,299. Our custom diamond-shape still is $1,999.
Is it legal to own a 15 gallon moonshine still?
Under US federal law, you can buy and own a still of any size and use it for distilled water, essential oils and similar non-alcohol uses. Making alcohol to drink at home is not legal without a federal permit from the TTB, even for personal use. A free TTB fuel alcohol permit lets you make ethanol for fuel. State and local laws vary and can be stricter, so check yours; read more in are stills legal to own. We don't give legal advice.
Should I fill a 15 gallon still all the way to the top?
No. Always leave empty space at the top of the pot. Liquid can foam and bubble as it heats, and that room keeps it from pushing up into the cap and thumper.
What is the difference between a 15 gallon still kit and a complete still?
A 15 gallon still EZ KIT comes as parts that you solder together yourself, which costs less. A complete still is built, soldered, tested and inspected at Fort Wilkins, so it is ready when it arrives. Both use the same heavy 20 oz copper.
Can I run a 15 gallon copper still indoors?
The 220V electric model is made for use without an open flame and plugs into a 220V outlet. Propane-heated stills should be run outside, since propane burners need fresh air. Always keep good airflow and never leave a running still alone.
