A 20 gallon copper still or a 25 gallon still is a good fit when small batches feel too slow but you don't need a giant rig. Every still on this page is hand built at Fort Wilkins in Pittsfield, New Hampshire, from thick 20 oz, 22 gauge American copper. Prices run from $649 for a 20 gallon EZ KIT up to $1,299 for a 25 gallon 220V electric still with element and controller.

20 Gallon vs 25 Gallon Still: Which Size Fits You?

Both sizes are mid-size stills. They give you a real batch without taking over your whole garage or shop. The 25 gallon still holds more per run, so you spend fewer days running the same total amount. The 20 gallon copper still is a bit smaller, lighter to move, and costs a little less.

Think about how much you plan to run and how much space and heat you have. If you want something smaller, look at our 15 gallon copper stills. If you want more room, step up to our 30 gallon copper stills.

  • 20 gallon: lower cost, easier to handle, good first mid-size still
  • 25 gallon: bigger batches, fewer runs, the most choices on this page
  • Both: hand built from the same heavy American copper

Heat Source: Propane or 220V Electric

Most stills here are made to sit over a burner. Two models are 220V electric. The 25 gallon electric still comes with a 220V electric element and controller. The 20 gallon electric model is a complete copper still built for 220V.

Electric gives you steady heat you can dial in, and no open flame. You do need a 220V outlet where you plan to run it. See all of our electric moonshine stills to compare.

What Comes in the Box

Here is what the product titles tell you about each type. A complete still is a pot, a thumper and a worm (condenser). The pot heats your liquid into vapor. The thumper redistills that vapor once more. The worm cools the vapor back into liquid. Learn more in our guide to the thumper keg.

The EZ KIT models come with an EZ Seal Cap and a 4 inch thumper port, and you do the soldering. That's where you get to work like a true alchemist, with copper, heat and your own two hands. Read more about our DIY still kits.

  • 25 Gallon Advanced with 6 gallon thumper and 6 gallon worm (one version adds a 1/2 inch coil)
  • 25 Gallon Advanced Pure Copper Distiller
  • Complete 20 gallon copper still and 20 gallon 220V electric still
  • 20 and 25 gallon EZ KITs you solder yourself

Why Heavy 22 Gauge Copper Matters

Cheap thin imported stills can dent, warp and wear out fast. Our stills use 20 oz, 22 gauge American copper, which is much heavier. Each still is cut, rolled, formed, soldered, tested, adjusted and inspected before it leaves the building. We assemble with lead-free silver solder.

I'm G.G. Wilkins, and I build these stills to last. That's why our copper stills carry a lifetime warranty. Want the numbers behind gauge and ounce? See what thickness copper for a still.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a 20 gallon copper still cost?

On this page, 20 gallon stills range from $649 for the EZ KIT to $1,199 for the 220V electric model. The complete 20 gallon copper still is $899. All are in stock.

How much is a 25 gallon still?

Our 25 gallon stills range from $679 for the EZ KIT to $1,299 for the 220V electric still with element and controller. The 25 gallon Advanced models with thumper and worm are $1,100.

Is it legal to own a 25 gallon still?

Under US federal law, you can buy and own a still of any size. You can use it for distilled water, essential oils and other non-alcohol uses. Making spirits to drink at home is not legal without a federal TTB permit, even for personal use, though a free TTB fuel alcohol permit lets you make ethanol for fuel. State and local laws can be stricter, so check yours; we don't give legal advice. More here: are stills legal to own?

What does the thumper do on a 20 gallon moonshine still?

The thumper sits between the pot and the worm. Hot vapor from the pot bubbles through it and gets redistilled one more time. Then the worm cools that vapor back into liquid.

Should I get a complete still or an EZ KIT?

A complete still is built, soldered and inspected by us, so it's ready to set up. An EZ KIT costs less, and you solder it yourself. Pick the kit if you like hands-on work and have basic soldering skills.
